What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

Shorter David Brooks:
Kerry's Cast of Thousands
  • All the Democratic consultants put together canít hold a candle to one Karl Rove when it comes to fabricating a candidate's public image.
(Posted a day late.)

Shorter Richard Cohen:
Purple and Proud of It
  • I don't like Mr. Bush nearly as much as I once did, but I really loathe people who dislike him more than I now do.

Update: Do not miss The Daily Howler's take on The Two Cohens and James Wolcott's dissection of the "liberal" Attack Pussy (with thanks to commenter Philboid Studge for the latter link).

Shorter Max Boot:
A Democratic World Is No Neocon Folly
  • Freedom and democracy are much too important to be left for people in other countries to choose for themselves.

Mr. Boot is right about one thing - when he notes that democracies "are less prone to armed conflict". For example, if the United States of America were a democracy then it would probably not currently be engaged in crimes against humanity in Iraq.

Shorter David Brooks:
Hawk vs. Hawk
  • There is some debate within the Bush administration over whether to maintain or accelerate the rate at which we are slaughtering our newly liberated Iraqi wards.

Shorter William Safire:
Those Discredited Memos
  • I have proof that Dan Rather is gullible: he once took my word on something.
