What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

Shorter Washington Post Editorial:
Mr. Lieberman's Strength
  • Joe Lieberman is a Democrat who builds bridges to Republicans and crosses them.
What's a few war crimes between friends?

My country, right or more right.

Shorter Alan Dershowitz:
A public advocate for the United States
  • Democratic Senators can signal their staunch support of Mr. Bush's Middle East policies by confirming an ambassador to the United Nations who treats that organization with the contempt it deserves.

1:30 PM PT

Shorter Peter Beinart:
Pander and Run
  • This excessive militancy, baseless xenophobia and shameless kowtowing to the Israeli lobby may play well in the hinterlands, but it's hurting America and Democrats should knock it off.
Trust me, I'm liberal.
Update: For more on Mr. Beinart's infernal contradictions see Sisyphus Shrugged and No More Mister Nice Blog.

Update II: ... and Rising Hegemon.

He wasn't there, he didn't do it, and it was an accident anyway.

Shorter Max Boot:
Bush Didn't Start the Mideast Fire
  • Mr. Bush is blameless because his critics are all wrong.

12:15 PM PT

Shorter David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey:
Israel Is Within Its Rights
  • What Israel is doing in Lebanon is just as legitimate as what the U.S. is doing in Iraq.
Torture is my pleasure.
Plus: Who are these people, you ask? The blurb knows:
The writers are Washington lawyers who served in the Justice Department under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. They are members of the U.N. Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

Yes, Messrs. Rivkin and Casey are America's emissaries to the international human rights community.

No, really.

The revolution will be complete when the language is perfect.

Today on CNN:

DOBBS: ...There has been a change in the language at the Pentagon. We're hearing instead of talk of insurgents, different expressions about those people that we're fighting.

What is behind that?

Does anybody even know what year it is? MCINTYRE: Well, you know, instead of calling this a civil war between Sunni and Shia militias, which is what a lot of people believe is actually happening there, the military keeps referring to "death squads." They're going after death squads instead of militia, basically implying that it's a fairly small group of assassins who are going around causing trouble.

It's their way of, I think, controlling the perception that this is not spinning out of control into a civil war, but something that's more manageable. And I guess it's debate that's just going to go on. But the reality is that part of the problem they have here is that some of the people who are being killed by these death squads, some of those so-called death squad members, are within the Iraqi security forces, and they've got to root them out as well.

DOBBS: Again, an example of trying to control language in an effort to try to control perception

This can be all so confusing. Is "terrorist" still Ingsoc?
